The Inambues

Although they are commonly known as «partridges», these birds belonging to the Order Tinamiformes actually have nothing to do with the true partridges, which are related to roosters and pheasants. Surprisingly, the closest relatives of the Inambues are the South American Rheas. Like the latter, the Inambues are exclusively terrestrial but they do fly. Its flight, however, is not sustained, and its ability to change direction during flight is very limited. They feed mainly on insects and seeds, and they nest on the ground. In Central and South America, where these birds inhabit, they are among the sport hunters’ preferred catch; so, several of these species have decreased their numbers.
